This first CD contains some of the early Teen Pop and Doo Wop influenced Songs Jimmy Curtiss recorded for United Artists, Warner Brothers, and later Laurie Records. Without You and Five Smooth Stones he co-wrote with one D. Fleischhacker. The other early tracks were written by Ernie Maresca and others. Psychedelic Situation, Gone But Not Forgotten and also Child Of Clay he co-wrote with Ernie Maresca, who also produced the 1967 single by J.C. The songwriting on the first two Hobbits albums was mostly done by Jimmy Curtiss, Marcia Hillman, and Terry Philips. The latter also produced. As arranger the cover of Men And Doors names Jerry Vance, conducter is Dan Mahony. So we see the same names here, that appear again concerning further ventures of Jimmy Curtiss and his company Perception Productions. The songs on Back From Middle Earth were written by members of The Bag and Jimmy Curtiss. Producer was Terry Philips again. Jerry Vance also appears on Jimmy Curtiss’ solo LP Life on piano. The songs here were written by Curtiss, Hillman and the musicians who played on the album. So it seems Perception was a kind of family with the same people working together on various projects.

This second CD contains music written and/or produced by Jimmy Curtiss or Perception Productions respectively. The Jimmie Rodgers single Child Of Clay was as far as I know the only chart success Jimmy Curtiss enjoyed as a songwriter let alone artist. It’s interesting to see that Joe DiMarzo and Jay Savino as well as Danny Mahony of The Bag appear again as songwriters – and possibly musicians – on the New Hobbits album. The New Hobbits album was probably a half-hearted affair and never officially released. Anyways, The Bag album was produced by Terry Philips again. Here as well as on the Velvet Night LP we come across the name Steve Kanyon. Steve and J.C. co-produced the Velvet Night. And Steve appears on the New Hobbits LP as well. It’s hard to tell which record came first, The Bag or the Velvet Night. Probably both were recorded and released in 1968. Here on this CD I included the 7” versions of The Bag’s I Want You By My Side and Red, Purple And Blue. At least the first one is shorter and a little different from the album version. The Jon Bartel Thing LP was recorded in New York, despite the fact that the band is said to be from California. Well, I’m not too sure about that, anyway. Producers were J.C. and Terry Philips (again). Songwriting credits go mostly to Jimmy Curtiss, Terry Philips, Steve Kanyon, and Marcia Hillman. Meanwhile they had their own publishing as well, Popdraw Music Corp. Compare the two versions of Freak Show by Velvet Night and The Jon Bartel Thing. Also Where Can I Hide (written by Curtiss / Hillman) appears again on J.C.’s solo LP of the same year.

The songs on the Floyd Westerman album where mostly written and arranged by Jimmy Curtiss. The record was recorded in New York and Nashville. Finally, the John Simson LP We Can Be Everything was produced in New York and England by J.C. and Terry Philips, with Humboldt County coming from the US sessions and Just A Matter Of Time from the English Morgan Sound Studio in Willesden.
